Description: Rare, early wax over papier-mache Bebe by Schmitt & Fils, 14.25 inches. This is an advanced collector doll with an important early place in the development of the French bebe. I found her on a buying trip in Europe from a Parisian dealer. This is the forerunner of the highly valued round face bisque doll of this company circa 1880. She has an 8 ball-jointed body with straight wrists. Her bright very expressive blue glass paperweight eyes are inset.

Marks: the body has the Schmitt & Fils stamp on the bottom of her characteristically square-edged derriere

Clothing: She wears a burgundy silk dress and hat trimmed in lace, made by a talented Russian seamstress. It is appropriate to the doll and the period. Handmade antique socks and shoes that have different silver buckles.

Condition: minor wear and marks to her head and body that are usual for these early attempts at unbreakable (incassable) dolls, but overall good condition for her age and rarity.
